Betfair Exchange: the honest guide

Not connectable yet — coming soon

BetTrading.net connects Betdaq and Smarkets today. Matchbook is next, and Betfair follows it. This guide is here so you can weigh Betfair against the others before you decide where to open accounts — everything below is accurate, but you cannot trade Betfair through BetTrading.net just yet.

Betfair invented the modern betting exchange in 2000 and remains, by a distance, the biggest. If you trade exchanges seriously you will almost certainly want a Betfair account — while keeping a clear eye on what it costs you.

What it is, and who it suits

Betfair's exchange (now part of Flutter Entertainment) is the global benchmark: the broadest sports coverage, the deepest markets, and the liquidity that makes in-play trading viable at size. It suits traders who need their bets matched instantly at scale — which, for horse racing and top-flight football, usually means everyone.

Getting API access, step by step

BetTrading.net connects to Betfair through Betfair's Exchange API, which requires an Application Key on your account. (Costs verified against Betfair's developer support pages, 9 August 2026.)

  1. Open and verify a Betfair account at betfair.com — the usual identity checks (18+, KYC) apply, and the account should be funded.
  2. Create a developer app key. Sign in to Betfair's developer programme (developer.betfair.com) with your Betfair account and create an Application Key. You initially receive a Delayed key — free, intended for development, with delayed price data.
  3. Activate a Live key when you're ready to trade: a one-off, non-refundable £499 activation fee is debited from your Betfair account on approval. There are no ongoing API subscription costs for personal use.
  4. Connect in BetTrading.net: add Betfair on the connections screen with your Betfair credentials — see Connecting your exchanges.
